Nathan’s chess journey, featured by FIDE

We are proud of Nathan, a 14-year-old learner at Autism School International, whose chess journey was featured by FIDE, the International Chess Federation, on its Infinite Chess project website.

Nathan joined the FIDE Infinite Chess programme in Kenya in January 2025. He started as a quiet observer, and with coaching from Phylis Ngigi, the programme’s partner in Kenya and a national chess coach, he grew into a confident player.

At the Jumuiya ya Afrika Mashariki Open Chess Tournament, organised by The Gift of Chess as an inclusive event for players with and without disabilities, Nathan played in the under-18 category. He scored 3 out of 6 points and finished third among all players with disabilities.

His kindness stood out as much as his chess. In his very first game he helped his opponent correct unsafe moves, and in his free time he helped other children learn. As our director, Tr. Winnie, told FIDE: “He’d gently guide them through moves, showing patience beyond his years.”

Nathan is now training for his next tournament. Congratulations, Nathan. Every milestone is a celebration!
